Roots-rock troubadour Matt Blais goes in search of authenticity, passionately advocating for connection. As a singer-songwriter, recording artist, and touring live performer, he has developed a purpose-driven creative life that inspires that connection in listeners. Performing meaningful songs with his signature belting vocals and harmonica work, Blais has built a full-time career with fans across Canada.
His latest release, “Can’t Have the Dog” is both a breakup song and a love song, quirkily commenting on possessions, relationships, and what we choose to care about. Matt’s wit and charm are at the forefront, showcasing his ability for storytelling and his knack for writing fun, relatable songs that are easy to sing along with.
Matt says, "My time spent as Calgary’s Songwriter in Residence opened up a new level of honesty in my writing. One of the things I love most in this world is my dog Mezzo... And I know everyone feels that way about their pets. So I thought there should be a song for that! It's a song about best friends." For this reason, the song strikes a chord with music lovers and dog lovers alike.
Matt Blais is the former Calgary Songwriter in Residence, has collaborated with Sam Roberts, played over a thousand shows, opened for acts such as Blue Rodeo, Collective Soul, and April Wine, at venues like the Coca-Cola Stage, and been awarded with "Male Artist of the Year" at the Calgary Music Awards and "Best Rock Song" at The Great American Song Contest,
he continues to solidify his reputation as a musical force both on and
off the stage.
Congratulations to Matt Blais for being awarded the 2024 Songwriter of the Year
at the YYC Music Awards!
