"It's fantastic. It shows off how much Matt Blais has really grown as a songwriter, a lyricist, and a musician. He's great." - Matt Berry X92.9
"Blais puts his darker side front-and-centre in his twangy, blues-inspired rock and pop."
Roots-rock troubadour Matt Blais makes his message clear on his new full-length album "In Shadow and Light": We need to reconnect. Amidst a whirl of toe-tapping harmonica riffs and belting vocals, Blais goes searching for authenticity in an increasingly deceptive world.
“In a time of influencers and online personas, what’s real is blurred and connection even more scarce,” says Blais. “Despite these forces of oppression, we’re all connected spiritually and technologically, and I created this album with a lot of hope. Ultimately, there’s a call to action in these songs – to restore what’s been lost, to unplug and look around.”
On "In Shadow and Light", the born and raised Calgarian reveals his chops as a chameleonic songwriter, weaving blues influences, rock ‘n’ pop hooks, slithering atmospherics, and twangy flourishes. Indeed, Blais is an artist that fits as comfortably alongside the best of his roots-rock contemporaries as he does the revolutionaries of Canrock.
In the six years Blais spent between albums, he’s collaborated with Sam Roberts, played nearly a thousand shows, including opening slots for Monster Truck, The Strumbellas, The Trews, and Blue Rodeo, trod some of Alberta’s biggest festival stages—Calgary Stampede’s Coca-Cola Stage, Big Valley Jamboree, and more. With awards such as Male Artist of the Year at the YYC Music Awards (2018) and Best Rock Song at the "The Great American Song Contest” (2016), he has solidified his reputation as a force on and off the stage.
Versatility his greatest asset, Blais carefully customizes his instrumentation and setlist designing unique shows for each audience. As a performer, his wit and storytelling charm and his raw energy is captivating and dancefloor inspiring.
“These songs are the culmination of playing countless shows over the past 10 years and truly discovering myself in front of an audience,” he says. “I’ve always tried to find and create real moments, and the best way I know how to do that is through song.”
Road-worn and refined, introspective and biting, Matt Blais illuminates the light that is found in the darkness.
